WASHINGTON — The 2024 Super Bowl teams are set and it’ll be just the ninth “rematch” in the history of the game, with the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers facing off four years after they met in Super Bowl 54.
While those teams are headed to Vegas, the Baltimore Ravens and the Detroit Lions had their Super Bowl dreams extinguished on Sunday.
When was the last time the Chiefs were in the Super Bowl?
This year marked the sixth time in six seasons as a starter that Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs reached the AFC championship game.
Kansas City was in the Super Bowl just last year, beating the Philadelphia Eagles in a 38-35 come from behind victory.
When was the last time the 49ers were in the Super Bowl?
The San Francisco 49ers last appeared in the Super Bowl after the 2019-2020 football season, where they lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. They had led the game 20-10 entering the fourth quarter, but then allowed 21 points in the final seven minutes of the game.
The 49ers’ last Super Bowl victory came in Super Bowl 29. At that point, the 49ers became the first team to win five Super Bowls.
When was the last time the Ravens were in the Super Bowl?
Excluding the Lions, the Ravens had the longest drought of Super Bowl appearances among the teams who made the AFC and NFC championships this year. Baltimore’s last Super Bowl came in 2013, when they beat the 49ers 34-31.
When was the last time the Lions were in the Super Bowl?
This one should unfortunately be common knowledge for all Detroit Lions fans. The Lions are one of four teams who have never made it to the Super Bowl. The other three teams are the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texas and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Eight other teams have made it to the Super Bowl but have never hoisted the Lombardi Trophy: Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans.
