Panthers hire former player Dan Morgan as GM

23 January 2024

Dan Morgan was drafted by the Panthers in 2001 and played seven seasons in Carolina. He’s been an assistant general manager with the team since 2021.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A former Carolina Panthers pro-bowl linebacker will now be the team’s general manager and president of football operations.

Dan Morgan was announced as the next Panthers general manager on Monday. Morgan spent the last three seasons as an assistant general manager in the Carolina system under former GM Scott Fitterer.

“Dan has a thorough knowledge of our football personnel and a clear vision to take us where we all want to go,” David Tepper, the Panthers owner, said in a statement. “We know he will attack this opportunity with the same intensity he did as a Panthers player.”

Morgan has a background both on the field and in the front office. He was selected in the first round by the Panthers in 2001. He played all seven seasons of his career at linebacker for the Panthers, making one Pro Bowl in 2004.

Morgan was a staple on the 2000s Panthers teams and ranks 10th in tackles in franchise history. During Carolina’s Super Bowl loss in 2004, Morgan had a game-high 11 tackles.

After retiring, Morgan worked in the personnel department of the Seattle Seahawks from 2010 to 2017. He moved to the Buffalo Bills organization in 2018, where he stayed until 2021.

Morgan came back to the Panthers in 2021 to be the team’s assistant general manager, a role he held until being promoted to the top spot.

The Panthers are coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise history that produced a 2-15 record. Morgan’s decisions as general manager will be paramount in putting together a roster that can help Bryce Young grow into a perennial franchise quarterback.

Carolina has yet to name their head coach for next season but the hiring process is ongoing.
