LAS VEGAS — Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl with a 25-22 overtime win against the San Francisco 49ers in what many deemed a rematch championship game.

Don’t count out Patrick Mahomes, who won his third Super Bowl title with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Harman in overtime. He is chasing Tom Brady’s seven championships, the current greatest of all time. Mahomes is in the conversation as well.
Mahomes and the Chiefs became the first repeat champions in 20 years. This was the Chiefs’ second Super Bowl championship in a row and fourth Super Bowl win overall.
The last franchise to be repeat Super Bowl champions were the New England Patriots in 2003-04. That’s the longest stretch without a repeat champion in NFL history.
A touchdown in the last three seconds secured their win.
With this win, Mahomes will became the fifth QB to win at least three Super Bowls and Andy Reid the fifth coach to win at least three Super Bowls.
The game came down to the wire in the 4th quarter as the two teams were tied at 16-16.
However, a 53-yard field goal kick put the 49ers ahead 19-16 in the last few minutes of the game. Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker forced overtime with a 29-yard field goal with 3 seconds left to make the score 19-19.
This Super Bowl was the first use of the NFL’s new overtime rule. It is only the second overtime Super Bowl in the history of the championship game.
Under the new rules, no longer could the team that gets the ball first win it immediately with a touchdown. Both teams needed to possess the ball.
Overtime was a familiar territory for head coach Kyle Shanahan.
The 49ers coach was part of the only other OT game in Super Bowl history when he was the Falcons’ offensive coordinator seven years ago.
