There exists something inherently pro-forma regarding these “taking stock from the year” cultural exercises. We all make lists, look at the amounts, and squint back with what happened hundreds of days back. Does it have a larger meaning, these types of twelve calendar months? Will it all fit together? How will we all remember it? Columbia was not immune to the larger narratives that hit the nationwide music scene in 2022. We saw big shows and festivals return, but additionally a host of COVID 19-related cancelling, ballooning ticket costs because of inflation and the rise associated with dynamic pricing (thanks, Ticketmaster), and the lingering impacts the particular pandemic had on the psychological health of everybody (particularly artists). We also obtained long-awaited records from the loves of R& B giant Katera and the shimmering indie pop band Rex Favorite that more than delivered on the promise. Both long-cemented works in the scene were given clean lives and renewed power thanks to their recording tasks, so much that they now look like the bright young expectations once again. Speaking of “the picture, ” my favorite local picture moment of 2022 was your return of the Jam Area Music Festival, one of our own city’s best yearly music offerings that had been paused with the pandemic. As tightly coupled to the Main Street watering gap The Whig as the titular recording studio, there was some thing rejuvenating and bittersweet relating to this year’s festival. The Whig – a tiny room that will punched above its bodyweight with shows by works like Shovels & String, Richard Buckner and United states Aquarium – closed the doors for good in Nov to make way for yet another brand new downtown hotel. When consuming the stirring, transfixing efficiency of the Sun Ra Arkestra at the fest next to Boyd Plaza, one couldn’t assist but feel the same thing sensed every year at this time: the music, such as the calendar, can’t help yet go on.
