Columbia artists take to front yard to talk about their wares

7 April 2021

Columbia’s vibrant arts scene, powered in recent years by multiple photo gallery openings, festivals and special attractions nearly every month, came to a wall a year ago when COVID-19 close the city down. While some activities continue virtually and others start returning with a modified structure, some local artists normally are not waiting, opting instead to consider their art directly to the particular streets. Or at least their front side yards. Keenan Terrace Artwork in the Yard, first kept last fall, was influenced by similar neighborhood artwork crawls in the Cottontown plus Melrose Heights areas, and it is the brainchild of Bohumila Augustinova. The native associated with Tiznov, in the Czech Republic, has lived in Columbia for most of her mature life, including more than 5 years in Keenan Patio, a quiet, neighborhood-within-a-neighborhood associated with smaller family homes between your Earlewood Park and Eau Claire communities. A inventor of artwork and jewellery made from pieces of wire plus metal, as well as a ceramic designer, Augustinova developed a status as a proficient curator plus gallery manager at the Anastasia and Friends gallery (in front of the old Totally free Times office on Primary Street), and in her present position as arts plus culture specialist at the Columbia Art Center. In 2020, a friend invited her in order to participate in several open-air “art crawl” events in Melrose Heights, where neighborhood musicians and invited guests setup tables in their front back yards to display and sell their items. “It was warm outdoors, everyone was really good about putting on masks, and it was great seeing friends, ” the girl recalled. “And good to eliminate stuff, ” she additional, referring to the quickly acquiring inventory that a prolific originator in quarantine can produce. Posting her enthusiasm with a few fellow artists who resided nearby, Augustinova launched the very first Keenan Terrace art occasion last fall in her large front yard. “The first time had been epic, ” she mentioned, adding that, of the fourteen participants, nearly all reported their finest sales ever for this kind of event. Twenty artists is going to be featured at the next occasion, to be held April ten, including neo-expressionist painters Jordan Krajewski and Lucas Sams, metalsmith and lapidary artist Valerie Lamott, mixed mass media artists Susan Lenz plus K. Wayne Thornley (both of whom have been showcased in Lake City’s renowned ArtFields competition) and Flavia Lovatelli and Aimee Norris, who work with recycled papers and rock mandalas correspondingly. Also featured are function from Candace Cotterman Thibeault, container gardening creations simply by Stan Cummings, and developer fashion items from Jane Catherine Kunze of Distinctively MC and Diko Pekdemir-Lewis of Anton and Maxine. Live entertainment will be offered by singer-songwriter Adam Corbett, that has performed in the band The particular Restoration, and who uncovered a new creative outlet throughout the quarantine in visual artwork, which will also be on display on sale.

As with final fall’s dog-friendly, kid-friendly occasion, there is no budget, apart from the token participants’ fee that will covered printing costs for a few flyers. Everything else has been performed via free social media plus word of mouth. An enthusiast plus supporter of traditional art galleries, Augustinova noted that those places “can be tricky giving up cigarettes trying to shop. ” Along with everyone located together within her yard, though, “people can walk around and look with everything, and then go back plus pick out” whatever item may have appealed to them. “Not everyone is comfortable going to the gallery show. People are anxious. Here, people will see art” in a more accessible environment, the girl reasoned. “People will also find crafts, right next to art work, ” the organizer additional, noting that elitists might look down on crafts, but individuals creators ply their business “for life, and they place their hearts and spirits into their work. “One guy featured makes hand-crafted fishing lures for fly-fishing. “Why not really? ” Augustinova exclaimed. “He was having a ball (at the previous event), and he was your first this year to say, ‘I’m in. “Also, in the current outbreak, capacity and ventilation stay concerns for some in going to indoor galleries. Ideally, site visitors can feel more comfortable in an open-air environment within someone’s yard. This continues to be Augustinova’s hope, at least. “Art can be just as beautiful within a garden — maybe a lot more so , ” she encouraged.
