Significant Weather Events for August 2023…
There were numerous reports of strong damaging wind gusts, hail and
flash flooding during the month of August.
August 6th…Thunderstorms produced locally heavy rainfall that
produced some minor flash flooding over central and eastern portions
of the City of Columbia. Rocky Branch Creek crested at 7.4 feet,
flood stage is 7.2 feet.
August 7th…An upper level shortwave produced widespread
thunderstorms from the Central Savannah Area through the Midlands
and up through the Pee Dee Region. The strong damaging winds downed
trees and powerlines across the area. A tree was downed on a home in
Newberry County. Winds also damaged a small out building at the VFW
post in the town of Pelion.
August 11th…Lighting struck Hagood Baptist just outside of the
town of Barnwell and caused a fire that produced extensive damage.
August 15th…A vigorous upper level system produced widespread
strong to severe thunderstorms across the Midlands and CSRA. The
storms produced damaging wind gusts, a microburst, small hail,
downing numerous trees and powerlines. A microburst at the Columbia
Metro Airport produced a wind gust of 88 mph and damaged the Eagle
Aviation sign and flipped over a small aircraft. In the town of
Forest Acres a tree trapped 2 people in a car and they both suffered
minor injuries.
August 26th…a trough of low pressure was the focus for strong to
severe thunderstorms across the central Midlands. The storms downed
trees and powerlines across Lexington, Richland, Sumter and Calhoun
counties.
August 27th…Isolated storms produced some isolated wind damage
along with locally heavy rainfall. Some minor flooding occurred
along Rocky Branch Creek in downtown Columbia. The stream crested at
7.50 feet at the intersection of Whaley and Main streets. Flood
stage is 7.2 feet.
August 30th…The Midlands and CSRA were impacted by the impacts of
Tropical Storm Idalia. Idalia made landfall in the big bend area of
Florida as a Category 3 storm. The storm peaked at a category 4
hurricane and weakened slightly before making landfall. As the storm
crossed into southern Georgia and to the South Carolina coast, it
produced locally heavy rainfall across much of the Midlands and
CSRA. The storm also spawned a brief EF1 tornado in Clarendon County
that damaged numerous trees. The main impacts from Idalia was the
locally heavy rainfall across the eastern Midlands from Clarendon
county southward across Lake Marion into eastern Orangeburg county.
Overall, rainfall amounts ranged from 3 to 8 inches across the
eastern Midlands and southern CSRA. However, across extreme eastern
Orangeburg county rainfall amounts ranged from 8 to 12 inches. The
NWS Cooperative Observer site in Holly Hill reported 13.55 inches
for the event. A mesonet site near Wyboo in southern Clarendon
county on Lake Marion reported 11.84 inches.
Here are some of the highest rainfall amounts associated with
Tropical Storm Idalia.
