Clemson opens a new season with a 78-56 win at home over Winthrop

The Tigers led by nine at the break before putting up 45 points in the final 20 minutes.

CLEMSON, S.C. — After holding just a nine-point lead at halftime against Winthrop, Clemson played like the team expected to finish in the upper half of the ACC, scoring 45 points in the second half on its way to a 78-56 victory over the Eagles from the Big South Conference in the regular season opener.

The Tigers (1-0) were led by PJ Hallwho finished with 20 points and five rebounds. It was his 12th-straight double-figure scoring game of the season as he finished 8-for-15 from the floor with two assists, a block and a steal.

Ian Schieffelin finished with 16 points and a team-best seven rebounds. RJ Godfrey came off the bench with a career high 12 points.

Clemson returns to action on Friday when it plays UAB as part of the 2023 Asheville Championship. Tipoff is set for 9:30 p.m. at the Harrahs Cherokee Center.
