Allen University, Benedict College post Wednesday night home victories

The Tigers and Yellow Jackets had solid nights at their respective offices as they each recorded wins on their home court.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Benedict 83, Savannah State 53

The 11th-ranked Benedict College men’s basketball team used a 13-0 run in the first half to build a 44-17 halftime lead en route to an 83-53 victory over Savannah State in a SIAC men’s basketball contest on Wednesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
  Brandon Smith and Malachi McCoy led the Benedict Tigers with 15 points each. McCoy also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for a double-double. Asanti Price and Gob Gabriel chipped in 10 points each. Benedict held Savannah State to an opponent season-low 29 percent shooting (18-of-62). Benedict shot 47.2 percent, and sank 10 3-pointers, while Savannah State made just one of eight 3-pointers. Benedict and Savannah State will have a rematch Saturday in Savannah at 4 p.m.

Allen 70, Edward Waters 53

Malik Lacewell scored 20 points as Allen defeated Edward Waters 70-53 in a SIAC men’s contest Wednesday night at the John Adams Hurst Gymnasium. Tyriq McAdoo scored 13 and Talton Jones added 11 for Allen (11-9, 7-6 SIAC).

Allen led 32-22 at halftime and held serve in the second half for its fourth win in the last five games.

The two teams will face off Saturday on the Edward Waters’ home court in Jacksonville. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
