COLUMBIA, S.C. — For the first time since 2017, the South Carolina men’s basketball team was a part of Selection Sunday.
The team and supporters within the athletics department and other special guests gathered at Home Team BBQ for the CBS Selection Show.
After avoiding trips to Spokane and Salt Lake City, Carolina learned it is a 6 seed and will face 11th-seeded Oregon as part of the Midwest Regional. The two teams will meet Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at PPG Paints Arena.
Oregon is the the Pac-12 Tournament Champion and one of its players is former Gamecock guard Jermaine Couisnard who transferred to the Pacific Northwest when Frank Martin was dismissed following the 2021-2022 season.
No. 3 seed Creighton (23-9, 14-6 Big East) and No. 14 seed Akron (24-10, 13-5 MAC) are in the Gamecocks’ quadrant.
This marks the USC program’s 10th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since the historic 2017 Final Four run, the school’s only appearance in the National Semifinals. Carolina has an all-time record of 8-10 in NCAA Tournament games with a trio of Sweet 16 appearances (1972, 1973 and 2017).
