“The Blues Doctor” is a title well-known around the Carolinas, since the iconic blues player is usually revered locally and well known within the genre. Playing within the style of Piedmont blues, which usually features a thumb-driven finger design, Drink Small toured with all the Spiritualaires in the mid 1955s and, later, with Mike Cooke. In 2015, Little was named a Nationwide Endowment for the Arts History Fellow. Free Moments: What did you enjoy we were young? When I was a kid I used to be just a country boy. Certainly one of my things was capturing marbles. I could have attempted to be a gambler. But We lost at marbles, therefore i figured I’d lose on gambling. What first produced you interested in learning how to play a musical instrument and what inspired you, or even made you interested in songs as a whole? I was 8 years of age. That’s when I had the accident and started actively playing music. There was a lot of guitarists around back then, but a great deal couldn’t really play within standard tuning. They’d simply use open tuning. A person grew up in Bishopville. Who had been some of the players you discovered from there? My uncle Homer. I remember him coming from Columbia — he was a child. He used to shine vehicles in Columbia. He grew up up on a farm, but this individual was what you called nation smart, not educated yet smart. And he had a music sense. And there was a guy named Greenback that was around the farm with me. I discovered from them. How did you begin in music? I visited school to be a barber, yet I didn’t want to reduce hair: I wanted to cut upward. I became a guitarist full time. First I performed gospel with the Spiritualaires. All of us played at the Apollo, and am toured with Sam Cooke and the Staple Singers. After that Sister Rosetta Tharpe wished me to join her music group.

What made you turn your own music focus to doldrums after playing gospel songs? Well, let me tell you something. I actually don’t know what age I used to be, but I started actively playing because I realized that many people, they had a guitar, however they wasn’t really a guitar player. These were a strummer or a frammer. They used that open up tuning and didn’t understand how to tune it to Chemical or how to play a good F#. Back then, I would view some of these guys use a pad or knife as a capo. Your stage banter, “Drinkisms, ” how did this particular get its start plus stick throughout the years? Therefore , after all this time playing songs, how did you get title “Blues Doctor? “They contact me the Blues Physician ’cause I can play all of the styles: ragtime, Piedmont doldrums, Delta, Chicago blues. I used to be already the Blues Physician when I was down within Bishopville but they didn’t contact me that. I arrived up playing both doldrums and gospel. I performed piano in the church. However they wouldn’t allow guitars within the church because it was guilty. Calling me The Doldrums Doctor would have been guilty then.
