Significant Weather Events for August 2022…
August 3rd – A surface trough along with outflow boundaries
initiated convection across the central Midlands. These strong to
severe thunderstorms produced penny to nickel size hail and downed
tree and powerlines, especially across Sumter county.
August 12th – A cold front produced 1 to 2 inches of rain across a
good portion of the Midlands and Central Savannah River Area. A few
areas received rainfall amounts around 3 inches. The front also
produced one severe thunderstorm across northern Lancaster county.
The storm downed trees and power lines.
Behind the cold front a pleasantly cooler and drier airmass produced
morning low temperatures on the 15th in the middle to upper 50s.

August 29th – Thunderstorms produced locally heavy rainfall across
the eastern Midlands, especially Orangeburg county. Rainfall amounts
ranged from 1 to 3 inches with a few places up to 3.50 inches. The
heavy rain fell in a short period of time producing flash flooding
withing the City of Orangeburg.

Hydrology/River Stages…
There were one heavy rainfall event over the City of Orangeburg and
a Flash Flood Warning was issued on the afternoon of the 29th.
Rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches fell in approximately 1 hour. This
produced flooding in several locations. Water entered 4 apartments
in the Malibu Apartments community. Water also flooded a car in the
University Village area near South Carolina State University.
Flooding also stalled a car along Chestnut Street near Magnolia
Street. The Sunnyside Canal near the Malibu Apartments rose from
