Initially my experience was good. I visited the Columbia, SC location 2/1/25 with salesman TJ. I didn't find anything on the lot, so we searched other Carmax locations that would deliver the vehicles to that location at no fee. We found a suv that I liked and had it delivered to that location. Tj the salesman followed up with me more than twice during this time to let me know the car would be there by Tuesday and I could test drive it then. Tuesday 2/4/25 Tj called me to let me know the car was in and I could come in to test drive it. The time I arrived Tj was in a meeting and teamed up with Brandon who also had a customer during my arrival time. I loved the SUV so I started the process of purchase with Brandon who was nice. While there Tj popped in and out to make sure things were going smoothly. I made the purchase and on my way out Tj suggested I get lunch for my son and I and to send him the receipt and he'll comp/reimburse our lunch and send me a check in the mail. I sent Tj the receipt waited 3 weeks and nothing. I texted Tj 2/28/25 and 3/11/25 no response. On 3/13/25 I texted him again he finally responded with "Hey $$$ I apologize for the breakdown in communication I have been in and out of work with a health issue. I will send a text to my team to get this checked on for you I will shoot you an update once I recieve one". I called Carmax a couple of days after that text response from Tj spoke with Deborah told her the situation. Needless to say I still have yet to get a call back or a check in the mail.

Josh was super AMAZING! I had an appointment with someone else who wasn't in the office the day of purchasing. I waited my turn and he was very patient with me. Considering I didn't know what I wanted and the two cars I test drove were not a good fit for me I was very pleased with what I did purchase and his customer service was top tier!

I’d give more stars if I could! I shipped my car in. It was ready for me. They weren’t able to polish it in time, but offered to do the service when I was able to schedule it. Bonus Star. But on top of that. I took my car to Toyota for a full look over, everything came back amazing….except they curbed the front end of my car. After fighting Toyota they agreed to fix the damaged. But here’s where carmax has won my business for life. I had asked them for the original pics of my car, and they still had them. After explaining what Toyota did, Carmax offered to cover the damages to my car if Toyota wasn’t going to cover it. Without asking if they had or not. Simply amazing. Chris is an amazing guy that helped with my car and would recommend him to anyone! 10/10! This is my 3rd sports car from carmax, and it only proves I’ll be back when I want another upgrade!

Buyer beware….so the purchase experience was pretty good as far as buying a car goes. The long term experience has been a joke. An area of paint had to be repaired by carmax at the time of purchase (bc no one would want to buy a car with peeling paint) carmax’s subcontractor (who painted it at the Augusta carmax location) painted the spot that was damaged but they only warrantee for one year….guess how long the paint job lasted. None of the original employees I initially dealt with are still employed there so it took literally months to actually get someone on the phone to even address the paint issue (although to his credit, when I did get finally get someone that was willing and able to help me he did call back with a response within 24 hours….the response was that I could pay them to fix the paint job that they did which didn’t last 2 years….so I could *pay* them for a paint job that they’ve clearly shown me will not last 2 years.
So my experience with carmax was that while they make it very easy to find the exact car you’re looking for, the price is honestly above average (especially if it has to be shipped here) and any work that is done by them (or was done by them before your purchase that you might not even know about) will be substandard at best to pacify you until it’s no longer their problem. This was definitely my one and only purchase with carmax and anytime anyone asks “what happened to your paint?!?” I make sure they know that carmax happened.
